The IIHA, it’s Executive, Directors, Officers, Members and Friends were saddened to hear the news that one of its members, Genevieve Veldhuis, had passed away this morning (Friday 13th January 2012) with her family at her bedside.
Genevieve was heavily involved in Irish Ice Hockey, having played with The Dundalk Lady Bulls and later involved in the running of The Cubs Ladies Ice Hockey Team. Genevieve was greatly involved with the Kilkenny City Storm Ice and Inline Hockey Club and in recent times played InLine Hockey. Genevieve was also involved in other areas of the sport and encouraged involvement of the sport, particularly getting ladies involved in the game.
Genevieve’s funeral will take place tonight, 13th January, leaving her house at 7pm, expected to arrive at St. Patrick’s Church, College Road, Co. Kilkenny at around 7:30pm. She will be buried after Solemn Requiem Mass tomorrow at 11am, Saturday 14th January. Funeral arrangements can be viewed at this link : www.rip.ie/death_notices_detail.asp?NoticeID=153544
Genevieve’s family have asked that anyone travelling to Kilkenny tonight (Friday) would bring their club ice hockey jersey to wear in a Guard of Honour and to meet at the gates of St. Kieran’s College, College Road, Kilkenny at 7pm.
The family have requested that jerseys only to be worn for the Guard of Honour and that the church ceremony is to be the traditional black. The family have also said that Genevieve wanted people to wear some pink at the funeral, just something small.
The IIHA encourages all ice hockey members to make a special effort to attend tonight’s mass and Guard of Honour. If you require anymore information you can contact the IIHA via office@iiha.org
Once again, the IIHA are all deeply saddened to hear of the passing away of Genevieve, she truly was a very special person and everyone who knew her will miss her dearly.
