New IIHF Arena Guide

On Tuesday, 28th June 2011 the new IIHF Arena Guide was presented at the General Secretaries’ Summit in Vierumäki, Finland.

“This Guide has seen a long evolution and development inside our committee from idea to reality, and we are proud to be able to launch it today, making this tool available to the entire international hockey community,” said Facilities Committee Chairman and IIHF Vice-President Kalervo Kummola.

The first-ever online-only version of the IIHF’s Guide to building an ice hockey arena was a complete rework and reinterpretation of the old IIHF Arena Manual.

“The new guide is designed as a practical tool to help in the decision-making process regarding the type of arena project that is best suited for a certain community, city, or country”, explained Veronika Mühlhofer, IIHF Facilities Committee Secretary, and project leader for the Arena Online Guide.

The guide features drawings, images, technical details, and facts for each of four types of arena projects, ranging from “Small” to “XL”. Through this online platform, the user will also be able to access latest news and information, and to view updates in the technology and building techniques for ice hockey arenas.

“Because it is online and does not exist in print, it can be constantly updated and will not become out-of-date too easily, like a printed booklet would be,” Mühlhofer explains the process.
