PREVIEW: Ireland v Bulgaria

Afresh from a trip to the Irish Ambassador’s St. Patrick’s Day reception in Sofia yesterday, the Women’s Irish National Team play their third game of the 2011 IIHF World Women’s Championship Division V.

Bulgaria is the opposition and this could prove to be a tight scoring affair. Bulgaria have so far lost 7 – 0 to Spain, who are surely dibs for second place, and in their opening game they lost 2 – 1 to Turkey. However, that score line may not give a true reflection of the game as Turkey outshot Bulgaria by 53 – 17. Bulgaria’s goalkeeper playing a stormer to allow them to just nick it in the end.

Again, nobody knows what to expect and you can’t always rely on the statistics to foretell the story but this could be an interesting game. Ireland most certainly has a chance! However, they’ll need the continued top notch goalkeeper they’ve received in their first two games while the defence will have to do as they did in the remaining two periods of the game against Turkey. Clear the slot and zone of any bodies and loose pucks.

All players will also need to be vigilant about taking penalties. This could end being the difference in the game today so the players need to be disciplined. Meanwhile, chances may be few and far between so they’ve got to be ready for them when they do come.

The game faces off at 6:00 pm local time which is 4:00 pm Irish time. The game won’t be broadcast live on the internet but there will be a LIVE TEXT FEED available on IIHF.com to keep everyone up to date with what is going on.
