The second game of Sunday, saw the Raiders host the Cubs. Unfortunately for the Cubs, the Raiders found themselves leading after only three minutes of play. Yuri Bondarenko notched the unassisted marker before Aleksey Tairov doubled their lead with Rinalds Kistis picking up the assist. The score remained 2 – 0 at the end of the 1st period with Raiders outshooting the Cubs 8 – 2. Rebekah Burke was in net for the Cubs and she was looking strong.
In the 2nd period, the Cubs got off to a much brighter start with Jana Gerkena cutting the Raiders’ lead to one goal after six minutes of play in the period. Before the end of the period, the Raiders found themselves down a man twice in quick succession. Vladimir Fedans went for interference before Valera Barkouski went for holding. This gave the Cubs a great opportunity to tie the game but it was the Raiders who extended their lead. Armands Paudrups scored the Raiders third of the game with less than a minute remaining in the 2nd period. This gave the Raiders a 3 – 1 going into the final period.
Despite going into the 3rd period with 1:20 remaining on the power play, the Cubs were unable to drag their way back into the game. The Raiders, on the other hand, extended their lead by two more. Barkouski got his first and the Raiders’ fourth of the night before Bondarenko rounded out the scoring with his second of the night. The score finished 5 – 1 with the Raiders outshooting the Cubs 24 – 10. The Raiders also lead the way with penalties as they picked up four minor penalties to the Cubs two. All in all, it was a good game and a great effort from a short benched Cubs team while the Raiders look to keep the pressure on the IIHL Development Division leaders, Flyers IHC.
A huge thank you goes out to Seánna Conway (Game Supervisor), John Carney (Scorekeeper) and Mark Pepper (Timekeeper) who all volunteered their time at the game.
